Sealed machines with fewer serviceable parts, where diagnosis focuses on electrical condition, operating envelope and what the system around it is doing.

Condensing Units

Compressor, condenser, receiver and controls assembled as one package, either outdoors or in a machine space.

Electrical Packages

Contactors, overloads, start components and protection modules, which fail far more often than the compressor itself.

Oil Management

Oil level, oil return and crankcase condition, all of which decide how long a compressor lives.

Suction and discharge conditions measured against the application the compressor was selected for.

Copeland Faults We See Most Often

The compressor is the symptom, not the cause. Most failed compressors were failed by something else: lost airflow, a blocked condenser, poor oil return, a control cycling it to death. Replacing the machine without finding that guarantees a second failure.

Electrical failure mistaken for mechanical. A contactor with burnt contacts, a failed overload or a weak start component looks exactly like a dead compressor from the front panel.

Condenser condition. High discharge condition shortens compressor life continuously. It rarely stops a system on the day it starts.

Oil return. Poor return starves the crankcase. The damage accumulates for months before anything is heard.

Short cycling. A compressor started and stopped repeatedly by a control fault wears faster than one running steadily for hours.

Why the Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis

A Copeland compressor that will not run can be an electrical component, a protection device doing its job, a control fault, an operating condition outside the envelope, or the compressor itself. Each is a different repair and a very different cost, and they are separated by measurement.

Each of those leads to a different repair and a different cost. Measurements and the equipment sequence come before a recommendation, not after it.

What Helps Before We Arrive

  • Model and serial number from the data plate.
  • The temperature the unit is set to and the temperature it is actually showing.
  • When the change started and whether anything else changed at the same time.
  • Whether the unit is running continuously, cycling, or not starting.

How a Copeland Service Call Runs

  1. Identify the machine. Model and serial from the compressor nameplate, application, refrigerant and the system it serves.
  2. Check electrical first. Supply, contactors, overloads, start components and protection devices before anything is condemned.
  3. Measure operating conditions. Suction and discharge conditions against the application range the compressor was selected for.
  4. Assess heat rejection and airflow. Condenser condition, fans and air path, because these decide what the compressor is being asked to survive.
  5. Check oil and crankcase. Level, return and condition.
  6. Report before repair. Whether the compressor failed or was failed, and what has to change so a replacement lasts.
