A warm upper shelf does not by itself prove low refrigerant, and a cold lower section does not establish that the whole display is performing correctly.

    The Case Holds Overnight but Warms During Trading

    Open displays operate in the conditions around them. Nearby heat sources, direct sunlight and air currents can affect the installation. Self-contained models also need the clearances and ventilation specified for their condensing equipment. These conditions should be considered when a complaint follows a particular part of the day.

    Describe when the change appears and what is happening nearby. Useful details include a recent move, a different display beside the case or a change in the stock being placed on the shelves. Where the case is intended to hold prechilled products, that operating requirement belongs in the assessment.

    The purpose is to distinguish the case’s response to its surroundings from an equipment fault, or establish whether both need attention. A recurring daytime problem deserves an explanation tied to the installation rather than a general instruction to lower the temperature setting.

    Ice Buildup and Defrost Problems

    Some open refrigerated cases use off-cycle defrost. In that arrangement, refrigeration pauses while the specified airflow continues to help clear frost. Other case designs and controls have different sequences. The technician must identify the fitted arrangement before deciding what a fan, compressor or control should be doing during the cycle.

    An iced evaporator can be associated with a fan or defrost-related fault on appropriately equipped refrigeration systems. Visible ice is a starting observation; it does not establish which component needs replacement. The assessment should connect the ice location with the operating state and the relevant controls.

A temporary improvement after ice clears is useful history, but the reason it developed still needs to be established.

A photograph taken when the condition is visible helps preserve its location.     Controller Readings, Probe Faults and Alarms

    An electronic display needs to be interpreted using the controller and case documentation. Controls can include probe selection, temperature differentials, defrost timing, alarm delays and compressor protection intervals. Changing the displayed setpoint addresses only one part of that configuration.

    If an alarm appears, provide the exact characters or wording and the controller model where available. A probe-related fault may involve the sensor, its connection or compatibility with the configured hardware. Diagnosis should establish which condition applies instead of treating every alarm as a request for a replacement controller.

    The sequence also matters. Note whether the case had a temperature complaint before the alarm or whether the message appeared first. If the unit is currently operating normally, preserve the earlier record. A quiet display at the time of contact does not explain an intermittent event.
