Tecumseh Faults We See Most Often
No-start caused by a start component. A capacitor or relay failure presents as a dead system. It is checked first because it is common, quick and inexpensive.
Overload tripping repeatedly. A protection device cutting out is doing its job. The reason it is being asked to is the actual fault.
Load outside the application range. A unit selected for one duty and now serving another runs outside its envelope and fails early.
Condenser and airflow. Restricted heat rejection raises discharge condition and quietly shortens the life of the machine.
Metering device condition. A restricted or misadjusted expansion device changes suction condition and puts the compressor in a place it was not selected for.
Why the Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis
A Tecumseh system that will not hold temperature can be an electrical component, a protection device, the metering device, the load, heat rejection or the compressor. The electrical and airflow checks come first because they are the most common and the least expensive to correct.
Each of those leads to a different repair and a different cost. Measurements and the equipment sequence come before a recommendation, not after it.

- The temperature the unit is set to and the temperature it is actually showing.
- When the change started and whether anything else changed at the same time.
- Whether the unit is running continuously, cycling, or not starting.
