Commercial Freezer Repair in Alliston

A reach-in freezer or walk-in freezer refrigeration system can lose performance when a refrigeration compressor, condenser, evaporator, defrost system, drain line, refrigeration controller, temperature sensor, contactor or control wiring is not operating as expected. Refrigerant leak diagnostics and repair may also be required. The system should be checked before a component is replaced.

What We Check on a Commercial Freezer in Alliston

Oil and Compressor Health

Oil level and condition where visible, crankcase heater operation, running current and noise under load.

Ambient and Placement

What surrounds the condensing unit: room for air to move freely, warm air blowing straight back into the coil, and a hot space around it. Poor placement raises head pressure, so the unit runs longer and holds less cold.

Charge and Superheat

Suction and discharge pressures converted to saturation temperature, then superheat and subcooling. This is what separates a leak from an airflow problem.

Controller and Probe

Setpoint, differential and probe placement, checked against a calibrated thermometer in the product zone rather than trusted from the display.

Defrost Operation

Type, interval and termination, measured rather than assumed. Incorrect termination is the most common reason ice comes back.

Condensing Unit

Compressor, condenser coil, fans and the air the unit actually gets. Head pressure is set here and everything downstream depends on it.

What We Find Most Often

Expansion valve or metering problems. A TXV with a lost bulb charge, a plugged screen or a flooded coil produces unstable superheat, liquid returning to the compressor and poor box temperature.

Dirty evaporator coil. On commercial food service and retail refrigeration the evaporator picks up grease and dust as well, and a fouled evaporator reduces airflow exactly like ice does.

Airflow across the refrigeration system. Restricted airflow or a defrost issue can affect temperature and operation. The relevant system components should be checked before a replacement is selected.

Restricted airflow across the condenser. Grease film, flour dust, cardboard lint and roof debris insulate the coil. Head pressure and discharge temperature climb, capacity drops and the compressor runs hot.

Loose electrical terminations. A terminal that has been running hot for months is visible as discolouration long before it fails, and it is the cheapest fault on this list to prevent.

Why the Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis

What the box is doing and why it is doing it are two different questions. The second one is answered with instruments.

What Helps Before We Arrive

  • When it started and whether it has happened before
  • Where the equipment sits and whether a lift or roof access is needed to reach the condensing unit
  • Whether anyone has already reset a breaker or a safety, and how many times
  • Any controller alarm text or fault code, written down exactly as it appears
  • Whether product has already been moved and how much time the product has left

How a Service Call Runs in Alliston

Diagnosis follows the same order on every call, so the cause is identified before any part is changed.

  1. Record the readings so the next visit has a baseline instead of starting from memory.
  2. Take suction and discharge pressures and convert them to saturation temperature.
  3. Say plainly what can be finished today and what cannot, while there is still time to act on it.
  4. Inspect the condenser, the evaporator, every fan individually, the defrost circuit and the drain.
  5. Calculate superheat and subcooling and compare them against the data for that equipment.
  6. Establish the current state: cooling, in defrost, off on a control, or locked out on a safety.

Symptoms Reported on Commercial Freezers in Alliston

The symptoms below describe how a reach-in freezer or walk-in freezer refrigeration system problem may be reported. Each symptom can have several possible causes, so the system should be checked before a repair is selected.

  • Product closest to the evaporator is freezing while the rest of the room is correct.
  • A freezer runs but product develops surface frost and freezer burn.
  • The controller shows a probe error, a high-temperature alarm or a defrost that never terminates.
  • Glass doors sweating on the outside where they never used to.
  • Water pooling under the case, or the unit tripping a breaker under load.
  • Energy use has climbed with no change in load or hours.
  • The condensing unit runs almost continuously and never reaches a normal off cycle.
  • The box recovers normally on a quiet day and cannot keep up on a busy one.
