    • Evaporator airflow and drainage condition. A blocked return-air path or a failed defrost cycle lets the coil ice over. The system holds temperature but runs constantly and ices repeatedly.
    • Restricted airflow across the condenser. Grease film, flour dust, cardboard lint and roof debris insulate the coil. Head pressure and discharge temperature climb, capacity drops and the compressor runs hot.
    • Night curtains left off open cases. An uncovered case takes a humidity and heat load overnight that it was never sized for, and spends the morning trying to catch up.
    • Control and probe faults. A probe out of calibration or hanging in the wrong airstream makes a healthy system behave like a broken one, and makes a failing system look normal.
    • Refrigerant undercharge from a slow leak. Flare joints, brazed tees, Schrader cores and evaporator U-bends are the usual points. Low charge shows up as low suction pressure, high superheat, a coil that frosts only on the inlet half, and long run times.
