What We Find Most Often

Dirty evaporator coil. On commercial food service and retail refrigeration the evaporator picks up grease and dust as well, and a fouled evaporator reduces airflow exactly like ice does.
Undersized or overloaded circuit for the real duty. A box asked to pull down warm product every day was often specified for storage, not for recovery. Capacity is measured under the real load before anyone recommends new equipment.
Blocked or frozen condensate drain. No drain-line heater, a broken trap, or a line pitched the wrong way puts water on the floor and ice at the coil.
Refrigerant undercharge from a slow leak. Flare joints, brazed tees, Schrader cores and evaporator U-bends are the usual points. Low charge shows up as low suction pressure, high superheat, a coil that frosts only on the inlet half, and long run times.
Why the Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis
One symptom, several possible causes. Pressures, superheat and amp draw are what separate them — not experience with the last similar-looking call.
